COMPLEX REGIONAL ATLASES IN BULGARIA (PROSPECTS AND PROBLEMS)

(Summary)

Complex regional mapping during the last two decades has become one of the most important disciplines in contemporary cartography. In Bulgaria, along with the publication of the National Atlas (1973), some complex atlases of the districts of Vratsa (1966), Sliven (1968), Veliko Tarnovo (1974) and others have also been drawn up.

Apart from the positive achievements these maps lack unity and pursue numerous goals which predetermine their universal features.

It is suggested that there tnpes of regional atlasses should be worked out: a) complex atlases of the existing eight economic regions in the country with scientific information which will meet the needs of the territorial planning and prognostication; b) tourist atlases of respective districts, giving common information about certain beauty spots; c) district atlases for school helping the illustrative studying of local plases of interest. All of them have been discussed and confirmed in respect with their complexity, structure and contents.
