TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS IN OUR BIG TOWNS ALONG THE BLACK SEA COAST

B. Vekilska, D. Topliiski (Summary)

Taking as examples the towns of Varna and Bourgas, some temperature fluctuations have been analysed on the basis of the average monthly and annual temperatures, the mean min and max temperatures and the annual temperature amplitudes. Cyclic variations, remarkable for their distinct synchrony related to the average monthly and annual temperatures along the North and South Black Seaside, have been recorded.

In summer these fluctuations are relatively slight and their cycles — with smaller and not clearly marked amplitude. The 10-years’ slifding average temperatures for July have been used to illustrate that the average monthly and minimum temperature fluctuations do not exceed 2° and the average maximum — 3°. Vague cycles are shifted in comparison with the cycles’ phases in January. The average min temperatures in July tend to rise while the average max — to drop down.

In winter the variations go up to 4—4.5° according to the 10-years’ sliding mean temperatures. Two positive cycles can be distinguished plainly in January. The first of them is the full Brüchner cycle with a typical asymmetry and higher amplitude. The second one extends probably beyond the period under investigation and that is why the exact limits can not be determined.

By applying the already calculated 10-years’ sliding mean temperatures for January and July, the annual amplitudes have been fixed for each sliding series. Just the opposite phases in amplitude’s cycles and the temperatures in January are available. Since the end of the last century there began a positive cycle with max during 1903—1912 which ended in 1912—1921 period. The next Brüchner cycle reached its max. in the years of 1938—1947 when the Brüchner cycle of January temperatures was over. In 1941 —1950 a maximum value was registered in the development of the second positive cycle of temperatures in January. The mean annual temperatures fell at the beginning of the century. Afterwards they climbed up irregularly and the max value was registered in 1936. A new drop followed which put an end to the distinctly outlined positive cycle in 1940—1949.
