OCEANOGRAPHIC ASPECTS OF SELF-PURIFICATION OF POLLUTED COASTAL SEA WATERS

E. Krasteva

(Summary)

The sea level fluctuations due to wind direction and velocity are the most typical in the dynamics of sea waters along the Western Blade Sea coast (including its parts in Bulgaria). These fluctuations show that intensive on-coming and out-going tide circulation is in progress near the coast. During the 12 year period of observations (1956—1968) 216 cases of sea level raising were registered, 189 of which were synoptically conditioned, i. e. they were due to water influx caused by a specific synoptic situation. During the same period there were registered 172 cases of sea-level drop, 110 of which happened in out-going tide synoptic situation.

More intensive seiche oscillation of sea-level are seldom repeated. Nevertheless, they influence considerably the coastal sea-water dynamics because the whole water mass is affected by them. The standing waves above shelf line originate hiefly as a result of anemobarometric factors and seismic phenomen. In 1935, for Instance, 1426 seiche were recorded while in 1936 they were 1605 with h≥15 cm; 643 of them had h≥25 cm, 217—h≥35 cm, 84 — h≥45 cm and 40 — ha≥55 cm.

All quantitative characteristics of some dynamic processes and phenomen n the coastal sea waters at the Bulgarian Black Seaside should be taken into consideration when suggestions are made about the distance and depth at which the affluent waters are to be thrown out in the sea.
