THE ROLE OF TRANSPORT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURE IN AFGHANISTAN

M. Ahgar

(Summary)

The article deals with the problem of transport and its role for agricultural development in Afghanistan. Because the country has not an outlet on the sea the main kinds of transport, functioning, there, are the road and railway transport and of considerably slight significance are the air and river transport.

Motor transport is developed to the greatest extent. The roads are 18 300 km long half of which are permanently used troughout a year. Asphalt paved roads account for 2800 km (15,3%). Of great importance for foreign trade is the international highway, crossing the country.

Asthere is just one railway line, 5 km long, we may say that railway transport is not available at all.

The only navigable river is the Amudarya. It contributes to establish economic relations with the USSR.

The air transport in Afghanistan maintains airlines within the country as well as lines connecting it with other states, but both are insufficient.

It is necessary to improve the transport system. This will put an end to the isolation of certain districts, will expand the foreign trade, and will create a common national market.
