THE INCREASE OF URBAN POPULATION IN BULGARIA AND AN ATTEMPT TO APPLY BIPROPORTIONAL INDICES

S. Tchukova, B. Penkov

Summary

Since our country took the road of socialism, a whole complex of socio-economic, demographic and natural factors has changed the ratio between urban and rural population which in 1975 accounted for 58:42. There were two ways for increasing the urban population — by growth of the urban population and by converting some villages into towns. The growth rates differed: 1946/1956 — 3,9%, 1957/1965 — 4,6% , 1966/1975 — 2,8%.

Applying the biproportional method the authors have tried to compare the development of certain towns taking into consideration their relative share in the whole urban system as well as in individual group of towns, ranked according to their population size. By means of iteration they have calculated a matrix of biproportional indices which consists of rank numbers showing the towns ‘weight’ diachronically. This method illustrates clearly the population concentration and the dynamics of urban processes in Bulgaria.
