AGE STRUCTURE OF THE POPULATION IN BULGARIA BY SYSTEMS OF SETTLEMENT

Summary

The dynamics of the populatoin in Bulgaria during the period 1934—1980 shows ist tendency to grow older. The percent of the population under 16 years of age has diminished from 37.4% to 23.5% and the population above 55 (60) years of age has increased from 9.4% to 19.2%. The population between 16 and 55 (60) years of age is considerably steady with small variatoins. The infraction in the age structure is more strongly expressed by the rural population, which can be seen in the table.

When taken by systems of settlement the age structure shows essential territorial differences (Fig, 1, 2 and 3). The advance in age of the population leads to negative consequences on the number and the structure of the labour resources. This is a result of the concentration of industry in the big and average cities. In the last years the state is taking measures to provide more regular territorial distribution of industry. This will have an effect on the improvement of the age structure of the population in the systems of settlement.
