DEVELOPMENT AND PROBLEMS OF THE HAMLETS IN THE CENTRAL BALKAN RANGE

Summary

The smallest inhabited localities in Bulgaria, which have not the statute of settlements, are generally known as hamlets. In the Central Balkan Range they have emerged in different periods and by different reasons. Under the circumstances of the petty fragmented agriculture they been the most widely spread and appropriate place to concentrate economic activities and give residence to the population in the mountainous and hilly regions with markedly disseated relief. With the passage of time, when the national economy has been transformed along socialist line, the settlements can not already meet the demand of the spatial organization of public production and service sectors and begin to decline rapidly. At present, their existence is possible only by carrying out scientific ally-grounded measures to stimulate their development.

The most urgent problems of today which the hamlets are faced with, are: the elaboration of plans according to which they should join the settlements having favourable economic and geographical position; the formation of multifunctional basis in the regions they are located and hence, enabling their conversion into elements of certain settlements systems; the building-up of a good transport network consolidating the links among the settlements to terms of commuting flow, education, domestic service and recreation; the demographic stabilization and growth of the perspective settlements by developing some industrial branches in them, by supplying manpower for the neighbouring towns and economic centres as well as by attracting non-agricultural population to settle as temporary or permanent dwellers; searching tor effective ways to use the houses and land, having fallen into neglect.
