UPON THE SEISMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF BLOCK MORPHOSTRUCTURES

Summary

The need to prevent bad consequences from catastrophic earthquakes requires new scientific investigations, related to the problem of seismic danger prognosis. An approach to this problem can be based on the idea of the block structure of the Earth’s crust. Great earthquake epicentres outline the ceismic block differenciation. Supposing that earthquake focuses are tied to the block differentiating zones a scheme of the seismic block distribution can be drown. Great first-order and second order lineament zones separate respective blocks of first and second order.

An attempt is made in this paper at mapping the seismic blocks in South Bulgaria. The block differentiating lineaments outline blocks, named Rila, Pirin, West-Rhodopean and East-Rhodopean. The method, proposed in this paper, is a real base for purpuseful structural geomorphologic detailization of the outlined blocks, aiming at formulation of a system of indication for earthquake prognosis.
