GRAVITATIONAL WRENCHES AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE MOUNTAIN SLOPE MORPHOLOGY WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE VITOSHA AND RILA MOUNTAINS

Summary

The formation of mountain slopes against the background of highly differentiated neotectonic movements has caused significant gravitational block-type deformations which in turn have a great impact on slope morphology.

Carrying out our investigations we found two typical cases of gravitational stripe slip faults which are well expressed in the latest relief and affect quite a large territory.

One of these cases can be observed in the Eastern periphery of the Vitosha massif where the wrenches in question have distorted its configuration and shaped steps along its Eastern slope.

Similar processes are registered within the northern marginal parts of the Rila massif. Belchinska mountain (Lakatnishka Rila) is taken as an example of gravitational wrench faults which occurred during the orogenic stage.

The gravitational wrenches are widespread. They are an interesting morphological element dependent on the gravitational forces conditioning the mountain slopes’ evolution.
