ECONOMIC-GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS OF THE SILISTRA SETTLEMENT SYSTEM

I. Penkov, K. D. Djambazov

Summary

Silistra settlement system refers to the well-formed settlement systems of considerable economic potential. Amongst the natural conditions and resources, the geographical position on Danube, the rich agricultural surroundings and the proximity of the Soviet Union are of importance. The nucleus of the settlement system — the town of Silistra had been established as a fortress in the I century and played the role of an important military stronghold till the end of the Ottoman rule in XIX century. Under the capitalism Silistra developed as a peripheral town with unsignificant political and economic position.

In the period of socialism the town and its settlement system have developed under the fruitful economic contacts with the USSR which led to the expansion of the port and the current building of a large timber plant to process soviet wooden material.

The railway line Samuil-Sijistra contributes to the economic activisation as welt. A ferry-boat line will connect Silistra with the soviet harbours of Izmail and Reni.

Some other problems are analysed such as the netter supply, agricurltural irrigation, construction of a secondary centre in Sratsimir, etc.
