URBANIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE VILLAGES IN BULGARIA

Svetlin Kiradjiev

Summary

Urbanization strongly influences the development of the Bulgarian villages, before all by its attraction from the towns of a numerous village population most of all from grain-production regions, from the villages within the range of influence of big cities, from villages weakly industrialized situated in regions with unfavourable natural conditions or villages isolated in transport aspect, etc. Since 1946 to 1948 the village population has decreased from 5,3 to 3,1 millions. The everyday labour migrations strongly increase from the villages to the towns (about 335 thousand people). Many people working in the field of education, health services, etc. go to work in the villages from the towns every day. In the past the villages were strictly agricultural. Now they are already transformed into villages with a complex functional structure. The conditions of living, work, education, contacts, etc. are strongly improved. The ‘diminishing’ of the villages makes the problem of the reconstruction and improvement of the village network very important.
