CHANGES IN THE NUMBER AND THE POPULATION OF SMALL TOWNS IN BULGARIA ACCORDING TO THE 1975 AND 1985 CENSUS

Ignat Penkov, Steffan Dimitrov

Summary

In is admitted that small towns are those with population bellow 10 thousand citizens. Of all 237 towns in 1985 the small towns are 145 in the number. 729 052 people live there (12,6% of the urban population). From 1975 to 1985 the population of 79 small towns has decreased in number while that of 66 small towns has increased. The relative share of the small towns is different for the different districts – it is smallest in Sofia and Gabrovo districts and largest – in Smolyan, Viddin and Pleven districts. The territorial differences in the dynamics of the small towns’ population are analysed. The small towns in the Danube Plain (excluding the eastern parts) the Sub-Balkan basins and the valley of Mesta river show a tendency of decreasing their population, whilest those in the Rhodopes, along the Black sea coast, the eastern part of the Danube Plain, etc. – a tendency of increasing their population.

The necessity of detailed study of the small towns and the preparation of “passports” for the purpose of planning their economic development is emphasized.
