Summary

The total amount of cargo through Austrian Danubian ports has been highly affected by other means of transportation during the last ten years. The article analyses the cargo specialization of Austrian ports according to a list of 20 cargo types and on this base the ports are divided into types. Port Vienna is related to type C (liquid cargos dominating); Linz – to type B (bulk cargos dominating); Krems – to type A (general cargos dominating). The significance and the geographic problems of the Danube ports are analysed.
