POSSIBILITIES FOR ACCELERATING THE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT IN NORTH BULGARIA

Summary

North Bulgaria is lagging behind in its industrial development as compared to South Bulgaria. This region is relatively poor in power resources and ores which make it imperative to give priority to metal-saving, energy-saving and science-based industrial branches there. The highest proportion in the total industrial output belongs to transport machine building and farming machinery production, glass and porcelain industry, textile industry and manufacture of knitwear. There are all favourable prerequisites to improve the sectorial structure of industry in that part of the country.

Two industrial-territorial complexes can now be distinguished in North Bulgaria. Of all 9 industrial junctions in the country 7 are located in the region under investigation together with many industrial centres and locations.

The sectorial organization and spatial concentration of industry have resulted in the formation of 12 regions facing serious ecological problems. The air, water and soil pollution is considerably above the maximum permissible concentration. So it is necessary to allocate funds in order to equip the enterprises with filtering installations and to provide better conditions of work, living and recreation.
