Summary

A brief review is made of the development of medical geography as a delimitation field between medicine and geography. The various concepts of its subject, content and methods of investigation are examined. Emphasis is laid on the increased interest in medico-geographic investigations during the last decades in connection with the modern scientific-technical process, the practical needs of economics and the more suitable organization of public health. Information is given on the geographic aspects of various medical disciplines and the directions of investigation of medical geography as an independent scientific field.

There has been an ever increasing interest in medico-geographic investigations also in Bulgaria especially during the last 10—15 years. A number of medical disciplines has been involved in different ways in the investigation of the peculiarities and influence of the geographic factors on the health of man. The medico-geographic approach is applied in the study of various physiological and pathological phenomena, some units having obtained significant results. Typical modern medico-geographic investigations are being initiated.

A discussion is made of some problems of the organization of medicogeographic investigations and the role of the scientific section of medical geography.

In conclusion follows an enumeration of basic forthcoming objectives to be achieved by medical geography in Bulgaria: Preparation of the first national conference of medical geography — 1970; Placing medico-geographic investigations on a modem geographic basis; Organization of complex medico-geographic studies on our territory; Elaboration of a programme for the training of personnel with a view to the objectives of medical geography.

These tasks represent an immediate general perspective for the development of medical geography in Bulgaria. It can be worked out and realized with the combined efforts of medical officers, geographers and biologists.
