LOCAL CENTERS AND ECONOMIC-GEOGRAPHICAL MICROREGIONALIZATION

Krastyo Krastev

Summary

The local centers problem was twice object of documents issued by the Central committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party (in 1S66 and in March 1970).

Now our scientists and planners should set-up a pre-planification scheme of local centers in Bulgaria, in order to help the general planning and the future localisation of productive forces for the next 15—20 years.

The nature of the local centers could be understood through clarifying their place in the system of the general economic regionalization.

In the microregions besides their very centers, usually exist local centers with commuting zones of local gravitation.

Local centers are smaller settlements (small towns and town-type settlements, also big villages).

Their productive and serving functions are relatively limited. The local centers as a rule are not important economic and administrative local points on wider scale, although. They might exercise industrial, transport, administrative, tourist etc. functions (but not on the same level as the microregional centers).

There also exist settlements which possess necessary conditions to become local centers in future. Therefore delimitation studies of microregions should be extended to examination of two more types of settlements: —

а) established local centers

б) settlements which are likely to become local centers in the nearest future.
