TORBARITZA — A FORGOTTEN SE TTLEMENT NAME

Summary

In the oppinion of the author Torbaritza Is a denomination of an old deseIated settlement, whose name has been forgotten long ago. The task, which is set here, is to saerch the place of the devastated settlement and the cause for the disappearing of its name from the land toponimy.

Turkish sources about the Bulgarian history have been used in the working out of the subject. These are registers for the Timar system from the second half of the XV century. Data from the toponimy have been used as well.

The name Torbaritza enters the list of the possessions in the vilaet of Vratza as a mezra Torbaritza. We make a conclusion that the settlement of Torbaritza, which gives the name of the mezra, has been devastated and deserted during the Turkish invasion in Bulgarian lands.

On the basis of written data and names of open countries, and also from the half-ruined fortified piont in the lines of the town settlement of todays Mezdra, we come the conclusion that the old settlement Torbaritza has been settled near by the fortress Kaleto.

The forgetting of the name Torbaritza is a result of the complicated and tragic social development of the Bulgarian nation during the many centuries foreign rule. Some convincing examples for forgetting other regional and settlement names, known in the past, has been given also.

According to the author, as a result of the historical habits of the Osman feudalism in our lands, first in the local toponimy the name mezra Torbaritza has been confirmed. After that, the name Torbaritza has been gradually erased from the memory of the people has stopped being mentioned among the other names of the settlements. Only mezra or mez(d)ra t a is remembered as a name of an open country. It gives the name of Mezdra — a small village from the beginning of the ХIX century — which is developing as a town settlement in the conditions of the socialist contemporaneousness. Thus, the non-Bulgarian denomination of deserted land— mezra, replaces the old and already forgotten Slav settlement name Torbaritza.
