SPECIFIC AND PROBLEMS OF THE TOURISM IN ROUSSE AND ITS VICINITY

M. Bachvarov, V. Doykov

Summary

The forth Bulgarian urban center-Rousse has more than 160 thousand inhabitants. It is an important concentration of industrial, transport and tertiary activities along Lower Danube. In the last two decades Rousse became also a main frontier point for the international tourist movements in East-Europe. Due to its geographical situation, in 1971 the total flow at Rousse reached 1,5 min comings and goings. Most of them—73% refere to citizens of other socialist countries, 23%—to Bulgarians and only 4% were the tourists from capitalist contries.

As a rule, tourtsts do not stop in Rousse or its suburban zone, although they have considerable potential for 1—2 day detaining of the travellers. Among interesting objects and phenomena are: the bridge over Danube, the public square, museums, churches, the port, the turkish forteress turned into restourants, the monasters in the canyon rocks of the river Roussenski Lorn (with wall paintings registered by UNESCO), the Bulgarian medieval forteress Cherven, the oldest agricultural station in the Balkans, huts along Danube, alpinist walls in the conyon of Roussenski Lom, one of the largest caves in Bulgaria, original villages and foremost agricultural cooperatives, the park Lipnik, some cultural events as March musical festival, local carnival, popular feasts and customs etc.

The activation of all these tourist resources requires far more developed accommodation, transport facilities, infrastructure, propaganda, better organization and service.
