SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND ITS TASKS IN THE LIGHT OF THE RESOLUTIONS TAKEN AT THE XI^th CONGRESS OF THE BULGARIAN COMMUNIST PARTY

Summary

The economic and strategic programme about the development of our country during the VII^th five-year-period as well as till 1990, worked out by the XI^th Congress of the Bulgarian Communist Party, regarding the formation of the material and technical foundation of the high advanced society, reveals qualitative new possibilities for further development of the geography. A more decisive reorientation of the scientific powers to a specialised and first of all to a complex research is necessary, which must be realized with the help of the specialists from other scientific branches, engaged with the exploration of the natural resources and ecological conditions in the country — by teraitorial units and complexes. These problems should be in an organic whole and looked upon as a premise for the research work, concerning the territorial distribution of the productive forces and settlement systems’ development. The geographical cadres are obliged to possess not only a general geographical knowledge, but up-to-date methods for geographical exploration of the environment processes and phenomena too. At the same time special engineering, agronomical, economic and technological knowledge are necessary. Except geography teachers the future social practice needs geographers with higher erudition in the field of engineering, technological or agronomical disciplines, so they would be able to work successfully in different designers’ bureaus, district people’s councils, Minestries, etc. as geographers, interested in the landscape, as geographer-designers and experts about the complex qualities of the environment, its conservation, optimization and regulation. The ensurance of such specialists demands serious changes in the geographical curricula and syllabus of the Department of geology and geography at the university of Sofia. The resolutions taken at XI^th Congress put a lot of new problems in front of the geography in our schools and the propaganda of geographical knowledge amidst the great public. The present of the school geography is insatisfactory.

The writing of a three-volume geography of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, the drawing up of a national atlas of Bulgaria (second edition) and the pudlication of a geographical dictionary of Bulgaria should be an obligation and promise of the Bulgarian geographers in the fulfilment of the resolutions taken at the XI^th Congress of the Bulgarian Communist Party.
